Joseph P. Kennedy and William E. James founded Citizens Energy Corporation as a non-profit energy company. Its original goal was to provide low-cost heating oil to underprivileged residents of Massachusetts by subsidizing the cost of fuel oil from margins realized from its commercial activities. The first deal concluded by Citizens Energy was a crude oil supply contract from PDVSA in 1979. This oil was processed in a refinery in Puerto Rico and the heating oil was shipped and distributed to Massachusetts.
Citizens Resources Corporation is formed as a for-profit oil trading company when William James negotiated and executed the first for-profit crude oil trading transactions.
John A. Hunt Jr. and Philip P. Leahy, along with a number of key employees, purchased the oil trading company from the non-profit and formed Citizens Resources LLC.
Citizens Resources LLC changed ownership, began expansion, acquired new assets, and continues to evolve into new areas of energy solutions.
Citizens Resources LLC purchased Mexican operating assets (including Gulf Mx franchising)
